These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who creates pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.
Most of Ms. Iwata's works are made by hand-building (a technique where coils of clay are stacked to form a shape), so each piece is unique.
Her works include three main series: "Tanka," which achieves a matte, metallic black color through repeated firing; "Sabikekeshou," which features designs made with slip; and "Haiyu," which uses ash from natural plants to create a unique and beautiful green glaze.
Ms. Iwata previously painted.
Her interest shifted from painting to ceramics as her fascination with clay grew.
The forms of her works, meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail, and her pursuit of unique textures in clay and glaze, result in pieces that are truly unparalleled.
