These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who creates pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.

Most of Ms. Iwata's works are created using the hand-building technique (a method of building up shapes by coiling clay into rope-like strands), so each piece is unique.

Her product lineup consists of three types: "Tanka," which achieves a matte, metallic black color through repeated firing; "Sabikekesho," which features designs made with slip; and "Haigusu," which uses natural plant ash to create a unique and beautiful green glassy texture.

Ms. Iwata used to paint.
Her interest shifted from painting to clay, leading her to ceramics.

The forms of her works, conceived with attention to every detail, and her pursuit of the texture of clay and glaze result in pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind.
