These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who creates pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.

Most of Ms. Iwata's works are created using the hand-building technique (a method of building up shapes by coiling clay into ropes), so each piece is one-of-a-kind.

Her works include three main lines: "Tanka," which achieves a matte, metallic black color through repeated firing; "Sabikekesho," which features designs made with slip; and "Haiyu," which uses natural plant ash to create a unique and beautiful green vitreous glaze.

Ms. Iwata used to paint. She reportedly transitioned to pottery as her interest in clay grew from painting.

The forms of her works, meticulously crafted down to the finest details, and her pursuit of the textures of clay and glaze result in truly unparalleled pieces.
