These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who makes pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.
Most of Ms. Iwata's works are created using the hand-building technique (a method of shaping by coiling and stacking clay), making each piece unique.
Her collection includes three types of works: "Tanka," which achieves a matte, metallic black color through repeated firing; "Sabikekesho," which features painted designs using slip; and "Haiyu," which uses natural plant ash to create a unique, beautiful green glaze.
Ms. Iwata used to paint.
Her interest in soil grew from painting, leading her to switch to pottery.
The forms of her works, with attention paid to every detail, and her pursuit of the texture of clay and glazes, result in truly unique pieces.
