Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The rough texture and the beauty of modern forms.
The coexistence of these two aspects is where Ohashi's appeal lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which she fires only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which she uses daily. She creates her works by going back and forth between processes, such as using the ash from the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the kerosene kiln.
This time, she is also attempting to refire works that were initially fired in the kerosene kiln in the wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, going through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once again.
The power that evokes the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze that confronts the materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the present of Mutsumi Ohashi.
