Yoji Matsuoka Solo Exhibition “The Mass”

July 18-26, 2026
Yoji Matsuoka Solo Exhibition “The Mass”

Glass is freed by its own weight, returning to the form it inherently desires.

Yoji Matsuoka, who has continuously worked with blown glass for over 30 years, arrived at the "Mass" form, which quietly adheres to the will of the material.

The plump, luxurious thickness is not merely for practical use.
When glass has sufficient mass, heat is retained longer, creating a "free margin" where the glass itself changes into a natural shape, following gravity.

Instead of controlling it with intent, he observes the trajectory the material desires.
The vessels created in this way encapsulate the organic fluctuations from the moment the glass was fluid, like syrup.

The way clear, colorless glass overlaps in layers, and light collects in its thick rim, is like clear spring water.
These are not "crafts" that impose tension, but rather warm, generous masses that are a joy to behold on the daily dinner table, no matter how long you gaze at them.

The strength and beauty of pure matter that emerges when intention is released.
Please experience these "lumps of light" that cast a quiet gravity on everyday life, at the venue.
