Tomohito Funaki creates wooden artworks in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "yin and yang," he carves out incredibly elaborate forms that barely resemble woodworking, then applies lacquer to the wood base and adheres polishing powder using a technique called "makiji-urushi" to achieve a three-dimensional texture.
The black color of his works is truly "jet black," a flawless, dark black.
You can directly feel the intensity of the shadows created by the unevenness of the makiji technique.
He also offers a "black tin" series, in which metal "tin" powder is mixed into the lacquer and then polished.
The theme of this exhibition, his third at our shop, is "white."
He has newly developed "white lacquer," which is considered difficult to handle in lacquerware, and "sabi-urushi," a three-dimensional and powerful unique technique.
We invite you to experience the surprising lightness of these pieces, despite their sculptural, substantial colors and forms.
Please enjoy Funaki's vessels, which defy conventional notions of lacquerware.
