Tomohito Funaki creates woodwork in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "Yin and Yang," he carves out incredibly intricate forms that don't seem like woodwork at all, then applies lacquer to the wood base and attaches polishing powder using a technique called "makiji-urushi" (lacquer with scattered powder) to achieve a textured, three-dimensional finish.
The black color of his works is truly "jet black," a flawless, deep black.
You can directly feel the varying strengths of light and shadow created by the unevenness of the makiji.
He also offers a "kurosuzu" (black tin) series, made by mixing tin powder into lacquer and then polishing it.
And the theme for this third exhibition at our store is "white."
New works include "shiro-urushi" (white lacquer), which is considered difficult to work with in lacquerware, and his unique "sabi-urushi" (rust lacquer) technique, which creates three-dimensional and powerful pieces.
We invite you to experience the surprisingly light weight of these pieces, despite their sculptural, substantial colors and forms.
Please enjoy Funaki-san's vessels, which transcend the conventional notions of lacquerware.
