These works are by Takuya Ohara, who creates pottery in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, featuring his "Rettou Kohiki" (cracked slip) technique.
Unlike typical crazing where cracks form in the glaze, these pieces are designed to have cracks form in the slip, revealing the black Shigaraki clay beneath in a mosaic-like pattern.
These pieces allow you to enjoy the cracked, mosaic-like texture and the black spots where iron content in the clay reacts during firing.

Mr. Ohara produces his works at his studio "craft-k" in Shigaraki. Utilizing the rustic texture characteristic of Shigaraki clay, he uses uniquely blended glazes and techniques such as kohiki (slipware), hakeme (brush mark), and shinogi (faceting) to create distinctive and impactful pottery.
