Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The beauty of modern forms coexists with an unrefined aesthetic.
This coexistence is where Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi uses a wood-fired kiln, which is fired only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which is used daily, depending on the piece.
He creates his works by moving back and forth between processes, such as using ash from the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the kerosene kiln.
This time, he is also undertaking an attempt to re-fire works that have been fired in a kerosene kiln in a wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, having gone through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once more.
The powerful energy of nature and a quiet gaze that confronts materials and processes.
We hope you will experience the current work of Mutsumi Ohashi.
