Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly draw out the nature of clay.
The rough texture and the beauty of modern forms.
The coexistence of these two aspects is where Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi uses a wood-fired kiln, which she fires only a few times a year, and an oil-fired kiln, which she uses daily, depending on the purpose.
She creates her works by going back and forth between processes, such as using ash from the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and firing it in the oil-fired kiln.
This time, she is also attempting to re-fire works that were fired in an oil-fired kiln, in a wood-fired kiln.
Each and every piece travels through the elements of clay, fire, and ash, returning once again to the flames.
The power that makes one feel the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze that confronts materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the present of Mutsumi Ohashi.
