Mutsumi Ohashi, who runs a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The rough texture and the beauty of modern forms.
The coexistence of these two aspects is where Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi selectively uses a wood-fired kiln, which is fired only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which is used daily.
He uses ash from the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and fires it in the kerosene kiln, moving back and forth between processes to create his works.
This time, he is also attempting to refire works that were initially fired in the kerosene kiln in the wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, having gone through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns to the flames once more.
The power that evokes the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze that confronts the materials and processes.
We hope you can feel the current state of Mutsumi Ohashi's work.
