Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The beauty of modern forms coexists with an untamed, rugged appearance.
It is in this coexistence that Ohashi's charm lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which is fired only a few times a year, and a kerosene kiln, which is used daily. He creates his works by moving back and forth between processes, for example, using ash from the wood-fired kiln as an ash glaze and then firing it in the kerosene kiln.
This time, he is also undertaking the challenge of re-firing works that were initially fired in a kerosene kiln, in a wood-fired kiln.
Each piece, after circulating through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns once again into the flames.
The powerfulness that conveys the energy of nature, and a quiet gaze directed at the materials and processes.
We hope you can experience the current work of Mutsumi Ohashi.
