Mutsumi Ohashi, who has a studio in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates works that strongly bring out the characteristics of the clay.
The beauty of his work lies in the coexistence of a rough, untamed appearance and a modern, refined form.
This is where Ohashi's appeal lies.
Ohashi uses both a wood-fired kiln, which he fires only a few times a year, and an oil kiln, which he uses daily.
He creates his works by moving back and forth between processes, for example, using ash from the wood-fired kiln as ash glaze and then firing it in the oil kiln.
This time, he is also attempting to re-fire works that were initially fired in the oil kiln, in the wood-fired kiln.
Each individual piece, having circulated through the elements of earth, fire, and ash, returns once more into the flames.
The powerful energy evokes nature, combined with a quiet contemplation of materials and processes.
We hope you will experience the current work of Mutsumi Ohashi.
