These are works by Tomoko Iwata, who creates pottery in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture.

Most of Ms. Iwata's works are made using the hand-building technique (a method of shaping by coiling and stacking clay), so each piece is one-of-a-kind.

Her works fall into three categories: "Tanka," which features a matte, metallic black color achieved through repeated firing; "Sabikekesho," which has designs created with slip; and "Haigusu," which boasts a unique, beautiful green glassy texture using natural plant ashes.

Ms. Iwata used to paint. She reportedly transitioned to pottery as her interest in clay grew from her painting background.

The forms of her works, meticulously crafted down to the finest detail, and her pursuit of the texture of clay and glaze, result in pieces that are truly unparalleled.
