Tomohito Funaki creates wooden artworks in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture.
Based on the concept of "Yin and Yang," he carves exquisitely precise forms that seem almost impossible for woodworking, and finishes them with a textured surface using a technique called "makiji-urushi," where lacquer is applied to the wood and then sprinkled with polishing powder.

The black color of his works is truly "jet black," a flawless, deep dark hue.
One can directly perceive the nuanced interplay of light and shadow created by the unevenness of the makiji.
He also develops a "black tin" series, in which metal "tin" powder is mixed into the lacquer and then polished.

The theme of this third exhibition at our shop is "White."
New creations include "white lacquer," which is considered difficult to handle in lacquerware, and "sabi-urushi," a unique technique that creates a three-dimensional and powerful effect.

We invite you to experience the surprising lightness of these pieces, given their sculptural weight and form.
Please enjoy Funaki-san's vessels, which transcend the conventional concept of lacquerware.
