"Re:"
A word that signifies a Response to the voiceless, a Reconstructive act, and a Return to the fundamental essence of earth.
Traditionally, pottery is expected to be smooth, symmetrical, and unbroken. This exhibition by two ceramic artists gently deconstructs these "normal" frameworks, approaching the material of earth from entirely different perspectives.
Fumiko Maruyama contemplates the beauty of decaying time.
She intentionally breaks once-formed clay and then re-joins it.
Her vessels embody landscapes aged by time, like rusted iron fences or crumbling storehouses.
By incorporating "cracks," which would normally be avoided, as beautiful features, her work exudes a quiet strength found in the space between destruction and rebirth.
toriimiki contemplates the beauty of "fluctuations" that subtly appear within the heart.
Like waves ebbing and flowing on the shore, her hand-building process is a time of scooping out her inner sensibilities.
She leaves traces on soft clay with shells and sand gathered from the beach, and uses a white glaze that embodies an indescribable light, like the shifting sunlight viewed from under a tree.
While at the mercy of the kiln's unpredictable flames, she accepts and cherishes the diverse expressions that emerge, deeming them "beautiful."
Her works are records of her pure response to the serendipity brought forth by earth and fire.
Fumiko Maruyama "reconstructs" the accumulation of decaying time, while toriimiki "responds" to the feel of the earth and the randomness of the kiln through her fingertips and heart.
This is a quiet dialogue between two individuals whose methods and temporal vectors differ, yet who communicate through "earth."

＜Fumiko Maruyama＞
2009 Moved to Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture. Began studying pottery at Tobo Hakuro.
2018 Began working as Kitotuchi with her woodworker husband.
Currently, she creates in her home and studio in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture.

1988 Born in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture.
2022 Completed the Tokoname Tou no Mori Ceramic Art Institute.
Currently, she creates in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture.
